Sick Building Syndrome

Sick building syndrome is very misunderstood, often effecting buildings such as schools, libraries, museums and office blocks.

Not having full control over your environment and using office equipment can all add to SBS. Its reported that SBS can be caused from many different factor.

  • Poor ventilation
  • High changes in temperature
  • Extreme temperatures
  • Dust, fibres
  • Mould spores
  • Chemicals such as cleaning substances
  • Poor cleanliness
  • Poor lighting
  • Ozones from office equipment
  • Display equipment excess usage
  • Over crowding
  • Condensation - reported to be the leading cause of SBS

Signs you might have SBS

  • Headaches
  • Feeling sick
  • Aching muscles
  • Unable to concentrate
  • Asthma like signs
  • Irritation of throat, eyes and nose

If you feel you have any of the above sick building syndrome signs but find when you have left the building these fade chances are something within the structure or fabric of the building needs to change.

Poor ventilation and air contaminates are a main cause and can be remedied by using spray foam insulation when designing a building. Spray foam leaves a dust free environment unlike traditional insulation materials, by maintaining a stable temperature through out the year and reducing airborne particles the chances of SBS are reduced.

Spray foam insulation can assist you by inhibiting dirt accumulation, stoping moisture from penetrating and creating a breeding ground for mould. Spray foam is no food source for mould so it cannot find the nutrients it needs to grow. Condensation is stopped
